In the little town of Fleetwood in Pennsylvania Dutch territory,
an unexpected industry took root at the turn of the 20th
century. Along with their thorough
knowledge of farming, many of the German settlers had also brought with them
expertise in carriage making.
But in 1905 automobiles were beginning to replace the horse-drawn vehicles and Josiah Johnson and Ephriam Hartman purchased the former warehouse of the Fleetwood Foundry and Machine Co. where they would manufacture automobile bodies.
Sold and renamed the Fleetwood Metal Body Co. in 1909, the firm grew. Originally each body was unique and decidedly high-end. By 1917 the expensive and beautiful auto bodies were the favorites of screen idols like Mary Pickford, Theda Bara and Rudolph Valentino who had them built for their Duesenbergs, Packards, Lincolns and Cadillacs, among other fine cars.
At a time when assembly line automobiles were, for the most part, black with canvas tops, Fleetwood’s bodies were painted in colors. Expert cabinetmakers custom-designed the interiors with matching woodwork that disguised amenities like vanity cases. Intricate inlays of exotic woods and metals embellished the door panels and concealed auxiliary seats that folded away.
In 1918, at the same time that the company established New York offices on the 7th floor of 2 Columbus Circle along “automobile row” (approximately 40th to 70th Streets up Broadway), a showroom was opened to display the luxury bodies.
Although by now many of the wealthy Fifth Avenue residents had moved further north along Central Park, mansions still survived in the 50s and the business that had already encroached were quite exclusive. The Fleetwood Salon at 10 East 57th Street sat squarely in this fashionable neighborhood where the firm’s moneyed clients lived and shopped.
The showroom was designed to slip quietly among its high-class neighbors. The two-story Mediterranean-inspired façade was at once fanciful and dignified. The wide, arched entrance held polished bronze doors that suggested a high-end jewelry store rather than an auto showroom. Rope-twisted columns, elaborate finials and a scrolled cornice added to the eye-catching design.
In 1919, despite having a new plant only 2 years old, the factory had orders that would keep the 375 workers busy through 1921. Touring cars and roadsters sold for between $1800 and $2500, town cars and limousines were from $3000 to $3500 each. American moguls with names like Carnegie, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt all owned automobiles with Fleetwood-designed bodies. Letters poured into the office with minute specifications for custom bodies and interiors.
Fleetwood bodies carried a prestige sought by owners like the Emperor of Japan, an Indian Prince, the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Poland. Herbert Hoover purchased three Fleetwoods, all of them painted dark green and black.
Two years after the salon was opened, a New York newspaper remarked on a new body put on exhibit. The cabriolet “had been painted in the loudest color and fitted with every novelty and improvement with the ingenuity of the finest workmen of the plant could devise. This car had not been on exhibit more than a few hours before it was sold to an Italian nobleman for $11,500.”
The Reading Eagle reported on February 1, 1920, “The chassis of a Packard, Pierce Arrow, Cadillac of some other superb make is sent to them accompanied by complete instructions as to the kind of body wanted. In many cases, no details are omitted. The selection of color and the material to be used in the luxurious upholstery of the interior being chosen with the greatest of care. The great proportion of the cars are built for those whose abundant means justify the gratifying of any whim and the special touch of exclusiveness has always been the aim of the Fleetwood Company as time and again it has won unstinted praise and approval.”
In 1925 General Motors was concerned about the survivability of the Cadillac brand. Edsel Ford had recently developed Ford’s own custom coachwork plant that drastically reduced the price of custom bodies. Lawrence P. Fisher of Fisher Body Corp. urged G.M. to take over Fleetwood, as it already had done with Fisher Body in 1919.
On July 18 the board of directors of Fleetwood accepted General Motors’ offer of $650,000. The takeover did not diminish the quality of the Fleetwood bodies. While they were still displayed in the tony 50th Street showroom, the façade would soon be altered to read Cadillac Salon.
On November 28, 1927, The New York Times reported on some of the new colors Fleetwood offered. “Some striking and original color effects are seen in the Fisher and Fisher-Fleetwood bodies mounted on the new Cadillac and La Salle chassis. For these new combinations the artists have studied animate and inanimate nature, such as precious stones, flowers, birds, butterflies and deep-sea fish. The result has been some brilliantly harmonized tints.”
The article pointed out a Cadillac four-passenger phaeton “in emerald green, with fenders and running gear in silver” and “a convertible two-passenger coupe is in colors derived from the Grand Canyon, representing brown, orange and what the artist styles Grand Canyon blue.”
The following year the newspaper would point out that “Gainsborough’s ‘Blue Boy’ provides the coloring for a Fleetwood body.”
That year, on August 4, Cadillac announced that it would consolidate its offices into the new Uppercu Building at 70 Columbus Avenue—a 12-story structure of 350,000 square feet including 25,100 square feet on the roof for repairing and testing vehicles. The firm stressed, “The permanent Cadillac and La Salle salon, however, will be maintained at 10 East Fifty-seventh Street.”
Nevertheless, it was the end of the line for Fleetwood. Within months Cadillac would move its body-making facilities to Detroit. On May 10, 1930 Automobile Topics announced “Removal of the Fleetwood Body Corp. from its home among the green hills of Pennsylvania to the great 1,500,000 square foot plant it is to occupy in Detroit as the country's foremost custom body building, has been completed…The New York permanent salon is continued.”
In 1933 the salon only occasionally displayed automobile bodies. The New York Times noted on March 5, “Cadillac is now devoting its salon at 10 East Fifty-seventh Street exclusively to the V-16. This limited line has no stock models, but the chassis is always on view, and from time to time will be shown custom models made for individual purchasers.”
General Motors built its 50-story New York headquarters at 767 Fifth Avenue between 1964 and 1968. Today no hint of the proud Fleetwood Salon survives one block away on East 57th Street or of a time when princes and matinee idols bought custom-made car bodies.
