My thought is poss...I had wondered about that too. My thought is possibly it was a clothes closet for the female workers either in the manufacturing shop or in the store proper. It is possible that the shop girls wore uniforms of a type; and the same with the women upstairs. So the pile of clothing could either be what they wore to work and changed out of; or the aprons and such that they put on at work.
