Maher's opus,"The Twilight of Splendor," from 1975, which goes into great and fascinating detail about the indomitable Arabella Huntington, as well as other architectural and human dramas from what Maher called "the age of American Palaces." Jim Maher, a great man and great friend, once confided that somehow or another, the saga of Arabella had come to Elizabeth Taylor, who had some enthusiasm for the (unrealized) project.
