He died shortly after the death of his brother, Lorillard Jr.. William was coming home from Switzerland to act as executor of Lorillard Jr.s estate when he boarded the doomed liner. His wife survived on one of the Titanic's lifeboats but died a year later in 1913. Strangely enough, Lorillard Jr.'s son married Katharine Force, sister of Titanic survivor Madeline Force Astor. Madeline's maid, who also survived the Titanic, later worked for the Spencers. The Spencers sometimes heard the maid waking up screaming in the middle of the night from nightmares about the Titanic. The Spencers' Newport mansion, Chastellux, overlooking Newport Harbor, is one of only two or three Newport mansions still in the hands of the families that built them. Levi Morton's Newport mansion, Fairlawn (mentioned in one of your features on another family that owned the house, the Burdens) is now owned by Salve Regina University.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
