I did some digging into that tale and found some good tidbits from a Cortland newspaper -- you may enjoy.
http://frenchhatchingcat.com/2014/04/19/peacock-standoff-plaza-hotel/
Peggy Gavanhttp://www.frenchhatchingcat.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-36222184513676233422014-03-27T06:16:31.059-07:002014-03-27T06:16:31.059-07:00Here's the latest news on this architecturally...Here's the latest news on this architecturally significant structure. You reference Steinway Hall as if it was open in 1924. According to wikipedia: "The new Steinway Hall opened on January 11, 1925 across the street from the Carnegie Hall on 57th Street, between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue in New York City." It appears they were in construction at the same time. Just two years later in 1926 the Vanderbilt Mansion on 5th from 57th to 58th was sold for approx 7 million, and demolished to make way for Bergdorf Goodman's flagship store.JeanRicard Broekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11470456577163498650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-90818552589518698532013-07-31T14:33:47.626-07:002013-07-31T14:33:47.626-07:00Great info...thanks for sharing. The award of the Legion d'Honneur was indeed exceptional: it was a charming anachronism to include the medal on the building nearly 60 years later. They correctly use the Imperial form of the decoration - since 1871 the star has had a Republican inscription and 'Marianne' replaces the profile of the first Napoleon.

Your column is always so interesting.Pax Britannicanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-61878626064685556772013-07-31T06:34:32.455-07:002013-07-31T06:34:32.455-07:00Eric Stott here: I remember when the medals were p...Eric Stott here: I remember when the medals were painted over with the "MG" auto logo. a pleasure to see them visible again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
