Our family name is Keenan (I am Bill Keenan), and our ancestors came to Rochester, NY, from Canada. Would anyone happen to know how I can learn about Fr. Duffy's family history? I live in Hell's Kitchen and Father Duffy is one of my favorite landmarks to show visiting friends and family. The inscription refers to WW1 as The Great War, because the statue was raised before WW2 (and WW1 didn't become WW1 until WW2).<br />Many of the Irish soldiers in the 69th Infantry were from Hell's Kitchen. There's a movie about them starring James Cagney (who else?). DeWitt Clinton Park in Hell's Kitchen has a statue of a WW1 Doughboy and excerpt from the poem, "though poppies grow in Flanders field." I wish there was an inscription about Joyce Kilmer or the Fighting 69th too. Hell's Kitchen is sorely lacking commemoration of its Irish-American and military history. Father Duffy square is all the more important for that reason. They also fought at Gettysburg, where they had another famous chaplain -- Father Corby, who later became president of the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) Too busy checking traffic. Andy Warhol moved onto E 47th the same month -- and he never noticed it either!Bootshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03917827580676287934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-68534579094099064372014-10-18T08:33:17.170-07:002014-10-18T08:33:17.170-07:00I live in Father Duffy's hometown in Cobourg O...I live in Father Duffy's hometown in Cobourg Ontario. I love to tell people to be sure to visit our hometown boy whose statue stands in one of the most famous intersections in the world. I wish he had more recognition here. - John Jolie, another Cobourger! Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
