Indeed, the IRT service pattern from the mid-1900s to 1959 had the Broadway train from Van Cortlandt Park (today's 1 Train) run on the express track south of 96th street. Eventually the switching at 96th Street, from express to local and vice-versa, caused too many delays and in 1959 all Broadway local trains were routed as locals to/from upper Manhattan, and all express trains continued as expresses to/from the Bronx.
