My interest is in a particular piece of furniture that is in the foreground, the lion chariot chair. I would like to know the provenance, maker, country of origin really anything possible about this chair. I work in a historic house Maymont that has one of similar design but without the wheels. I have found the auction booklet online but there is no mention of this chair. Any information at all would be wonderful. http://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/ggbain.01707/Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00491739628329201360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-68857929215669940132013-09-01T00:24:15.740-07:002013-09-01T00:24:15.740-07:00Just yesterday I finished reading 'The Stoic&#...Just yesterday I finished reading 'The Stoic' by Theodor Dreiser. The first thing I did in the morning was to search the web for any info about Mr. Yerkes and the fascinating 'Berenice'. Thanks a lot for the post and interesting comments about Ms. Emilie Grigsby. Good to know that the prototypes of the main characters were as outstanding as they are described in the book.
ElinaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-15188011390588441122013-06-26T19:51:35.300-07:002013-06-26T19:51:35.300-07:00What a fascinating story! thank you so much for s...What a fascinating story! thank you so much for sharing this.Tom Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13542224816886418433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-4030501168094908662013-06-26T13:57:08.648-07:002013-06-26T13:57:08.648-07:00Emilie Grigsby also attended Mme. My great grandfather, Alfred Charles Garsia, was a great friend of C.T. Yerkes and he and his wife & two daughters were often included in the formal soirees in the Yerkes' mansion on Park Avenue. When granny married Henry Francis Loomis in 1896, Mr. Yerkes sent the couple on their honeymoon in one of his private railway cars with a full staff, exotic foods, wine and champagne. C.T. Yerkes was my mother's godfather at her baptism in Nov. 1898. As a small child I used to play "dress up" in some of the Edwardian fashions and fancy dress ball costumes Emilie had given granny - so I can testify to her petite stature and build! Wonderful memories! Fascinating lady!
Clare McVickar Ward - 6-26-13 Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-19821574499656207862013-05-22T17:39:36.045-07:002013-05-22T17:39:36.045-07:00I enjoyed reading this post (and will be checking ...I enjoyed reading this post (and will be checking out the book mentioned by Sarah Richards).
