Over forty-five years ago, the late Ms. Israel had the advantage of interviewing scores of family members (including the active participation of Dorothy's youngest child, Kerry Kollmar), friends, and professional coworkers of Dorothy Kilgallen, the vast majority of whom have long since died. Unless there's been a new unearthing of written documentary material, I can't imagine any new revelations. Ms. Israel's source notes, located just before the index, are a jaw-dropping illustration of the exhaustive research she did, a little over a decade after Kilgallen's murky desth.Rafehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383709928350146692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-28716733059807658462023-12-30T14:23:21.573-08:002023-12-30T14:23:21.573-08:00I have no doubt as to anything you've written ...I have no doubt as to anything you've written above. I haven't read anything published by Mark Shaw, who I find self-important and self-promoting. I'm not familiar with your daughter's article, but I recently reread the Israel bio, which I purchased when it was first published, in 1979. Lee Israel's well-researched and annotated work has been my go-to source for the details of Kilgallen's life and death. I have absolutely no issue or argument with anything you've written here about the loathsome Mark Shaw.Rafehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383709928350146692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-74905021362784079162023-12-18T07:15:47.526-08:002023-12-18T07:15:47.526-08:00You are only partly correct. Shaw repeatedly refers in his books to his "research assistant" and then quotes passages from Lee Israel's book word for word without attributing it to her! HOWEVER, Mr. Shaw's big breakthrough was when he contacted my daughter, Sara Jordan-Heintz and me, after a big article appeared in Midwest Today magazine entitled "Who Killed Dorothy Kilgallen." Lee Israel never identified Ron Pataky as the suspected killer. We did. Sara did extensive new "deep dive" research and arranged for Shaw to acquire copies of videotaped interviews with people close to Dorothy. We also exchanged numerous emails and phone calls with him. We were shocked when he ended up turning Dorothy into a cottage industry for himself, producing FOUR books. They are repetitious and also derivative of Sara's research and that of Kathryn Fauble. He also expanded on our reporting and printed things that are wrong, far-fetched and unsupportable. His great talent is attracting attention to himself as his videos have scored millions of views. Unfortunately, that results in misinformation being conveyed to the public. He's constantly claiming credit for discovering this or that, when actually the info is contained in Lee Israel's book or Sara's article. She is coming out with a new book called "The Fascinating Life & Mysterious Death of Dorothy Kilgallen" to set the record straight.LARRY JORDANhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00669422421098258264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-34036058171032310122023-12-16T08:52:58.194-08:002023-12-16T08:52:58.194-08:00My daughter and I are professional journalists and...My daughter and I are professional journalists and since she wrote the definitive magazine article on the case called "Who Killed Dorothy Kilgallen?", Mr. Shaw contacted us. We gave him major research help -- free -- and yet when he talks or writes about many of the points made in his book he tells people he discovered this and he discovered that. Which is dishonest. He got it from us. The stuff he has added is often wrong, far-fetched and unsupportable, as are his "anonymous sources." A definitive account of Dorothy's life and death is the 2023 new book called "The Fascinating Life & Mysterious Death of Dorothy Kilgallen," which is about 400 pages and written by Sara Jordan-Heintz.LARRY JORDANhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00669422421098258264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-76937361140532702102023-11-13T12:54:32.798-08:002023-11-13T12:54:32.798-08:00Mark Shaw "borrowed" much of the materia...Mark Shaw "borrowed" much of the material in his Kilgallen books from Lee Israel, who wrote the definitive biography of Dorothy, published in 1979. Ms. Israel did all of the legwork and research, interviewing scores of people, still living then, who had connections to Dorothy Kilgallen, including Dorothy's youngest child, Kerry Kolmar, whose biological father is alleged to be singer Johnny Ray. After Dorothy's death, Richard Kollmar disowned the 15-year-old Kerry. Richard Kollmar didn't die of a heart attack; he was a suicide, ingesting "every pill in sight". What a wake of tragedy.
My advice is to skip Mark Shaw's derivative books and read Lee Israel's "Kilgallen".Rafehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12383709928350146692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-29757979437486537432023-07-12T16:28:36.042-07:002023-07-12T16:28:36.042-07:00A beautiful home in an age of real elegance. How ...A beautiful home in an age of real elegance. How sad that so much sadness happened there.

Mark Shaw's books, "The Reporter Who Knew Too Much", and, "Justice Denied", stated that on the evening of Sunday, November 7, 1965, Dorothy Kilgallen made her final appearance on, "What's My Line" (WML), wearing a white dress that had been designed by her husband's future wife, Anne Fogarty. This show can be seen on YouTube: she showed no sign of any physical or emotional distress, and she was as sharp as ever in her questioning of Katherine Stone (the "Dynamite Lady"), and the other guests, including actress Joey Heatherton. He claimed that before the show, she showed her fellow panelist, Random House co-founder Bennett Cerf, the introduction to her JFK assassination book, which he was to have published in 1966.

After the show ended, according to Shaw, Ms. Kilgallen had drinks at the popular bar, P.J. Clarke's, with a friend, Robert Bach, after which she informed Bach that she, "had a date". She then met a mystery man in the bar at the New York Regency Hotel: the two were seen there by bar staff until approximately 2 am on Monday, November 8, 1965, when she and the man proceeded to her townhouse a few blocks away.

Shaw believed that the mystery man was Ms. Kilgallen's alleged lover, Columbus Post-Dispatch reporter Ron Pataky, who, by Pataky's own admission, had attended the now-infamous School of the Americas in Latin America, which trained men for paramilitary operations against actual and perceived threats to American security and interests. Shaw alleged that at some point, Pataky spiked Kilgallen's vodka and tonic(s) with a lethal dose of three powerful drugs, causing her to literally drop dead in one of her bathrooms. Strangely, she was later found in both a bed and a room in which she never slept, still wearing the same hairpiece, false eyelashes, and makeup that she had worn the previous evening on WML. Interestingly, the room air conditioner was on, strange on a cold November morning. The cold air may have altered her body temperature, preventing investigators from accurately determining the time of her death.

As had happened in the death of actress Marilyn Monroe in 1962, the death scene appeared staged. Ms. Kilgallen's butler claimed that later that day, with a police car parked outside, men identifying themselves as FBI entered the townhouse, went directly to Ms. Kilgallen's fifth-floor office, and confiscated multiple boxes of materials, possibly including her JFK assassination files. They were never seen again.

The following evening, on Tuesday, November 9, 1965, New York City, the Northeastern U.S., and several Canadian provinces were hit by the now-legendary New York City Blackout. Some believe that the blackout was a possible, "false flag", operation to blunt the impact of Ms. Kilgallen's death.

On November 14, 1965, WML paid tribute to Ms. Kilgallen. Wearing mourning black, panelists Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf, Steve Allen, and Kitty Carlisle glowingly praised her abilities and achievements as a journalist, a radio and television personality, and a mother. In an act of true class, Ms. Carlisle said, "Tonight, I sit in Dorothy Kilgallen's seat, but no one will ever take her place." To date, no one ever has.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-35595613900772755582021-10-15T03:40:08.547-07:002021-10-15T03:40:08.547-07:00Hi Kathleen, I'm reading Mark Shaw's book,...Hi Kathleen, I'm reading Mark Shaw's book, 'The Reporter Who Knew Too Much ' right now. I don't know the exact years. They should be a matter of public record. Francois Mitterrand stayed there when he was in New York. Various French ambassadors to the United Nations lived there with spouses and children. In 1999, Nicolas Galey, his wife and their little boy lived on the third floor.Kathleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08365833914429686449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-45803001312675370282018-10-28T06:01:37.709-07:002018-10-28T06:01:37.709-07:00Regarding this text in the article :

She found the 52-year-old Dorothy dead.

Actually, the hairdresser was a man. His name was Marc Sinclaire. Dorothy Kilgallen had given him the key to the brownstone so he could let himself in the front door without waking the servants. She had given it to him many months before that mysterious Monday in 1965.

Marc was videorecorded talking in the year 2000. He says (present tense) that on that Monday morning, he arrived at the brownstone between 8:45 and 8:55 in the morning. Dorothy had asked him to show up at 9:00. Newspaper journalists got it wrong.

The NYPD file says Dorothy's body was discovered by a maid. Neither it nor the medical examiner's office documents mention a hairdresser or the name Marc Sinclaire. Newspaper reports do mention "a hairdresser" but not his name. And the journalists royally screwed up the time frame for him finding his employer dead. It happened a few minutes before nine in the morning.Kathleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08365833914429686449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-8767469731054104172018-10-28T05:43:05.860-07:002018-10-28T05:43:05.860-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Kathleenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08365833914429686449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-43293090291593250092018-10-22T12:41:15.403-07:002018-10-22T12:41:15.403-07:00Curious...Exactly HOW does a house "Lose"...Curious...Exactly HOW does a house "Lose" it's balustrade?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-22305553725293637872018-10-20T15:14:22.725-07:002018-10-20T15:14:22.725-07:00In 1935, with the Depression still in full force, ...In 1935, with the Depression still in full force, FDR’s “Soak the rich” tax policies taking their toll on those large incomes that still existed and the international situation darkening, Helen Porter Pryibil tore down her father’s large, shingle style country house Bogheid and replaced it with an enormous Georgian brick behemoth designed by William Delano, replete with a connected indoor tennis court and two lane bowling alley in the basement. It has to be one of the last really great houses built in the United States in the period from 1929-1980 and, at the time, a singular vote of confidence in the future of large houses and grand living. Mrs. Pryibil left the property to the City of Glen Cove and it now encompasses the municipal golf course and the largest of the public beaches. Great post, by the way.
