When Lorillard's father, Lorillard Spencer Sr., died in 1912, the elder Spencer's brother, William A. Spencer -<br />who was a lawyer, living in Switzerland - headed back to America to take settle his late brother's estate. Guess what ship he sailed on? William went down on the Titanic; his wife survived, only to die a year later. Years later, Madeline's maid, who survived the Titanic, went to work for Katherine Spencer. The maid was sometimes heard screaming in the night from nightmares about the Titanic. As for Madeline, she died in Palm Beach in 1940 ant the age of 46. The rented house she died in still standing, although altered, as far as I know. Although some biographers claim that she committed suicide, there is no evidence to support this claim. She had been battling heart disease that winter and stayed at home under the care of a doctor. So much tragedy in that family, on both the Astor/Dick and Spencer sides.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-31403999963169698472017-04-19T10:39:59.832-07:002017-04-19T10:39:59.832-07:00The fate of this home is why I hate modern renovat...The fate of this home is why I hate modern renovations. A perfectly beautiful interior, must be gutted to cater to the whims of a modern ascetic. And like a sign from above, is ruined by fire. Unnecessarily tragic end to a beautiful building.Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05097441437159417314noreply@blogger.com
