I used to pass the so-called "Diamond Jim" Brady home which, as a lover of all things NYC history, thrilled me to think about It was at the time, the Japanese restaurant you mentioned with the gold painted lions out front and the plaque that denoted the place as being a residence of Diamond Jim.
