Had I not read this posting first, I might have assumed that Sims was a monster. That's what a lot of the tear-down-that-staue gang are putting out there, that this horribly evil white southern racist literally tortured enslaved black women, ostensibly just to satisfy his vicious, violent desires. None of the good that he did is even considered. America has gone nuts lately. Nuts I tell you.Ryanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12183744621319137043noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-68422874716420365522017-08-26T16:09:54.125-07:002017-08-26T16:09:54.125-07:00AMENAMENA Tennessee Fannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-58953883557584227022017-08-26T15:43:01.361-07:002017-08-26T15:43:01.361-07:00I agree. I think this story simply enforces the necessity to carefully and accurately study the details of any historical figure before making conclusions.Tom Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13542224816886418433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-47560398485486416192017-08-26T15:34:41.874-07:002017-08-26T15:34:41.874-07:00Thank you for your comments re this statue Tom, I ...Thank you for your comments re this statue Tom, I trust your research and also feel the pendulum swinging back too far. We shouldn't forget however that some civil war statues WERE put up in the period of Jim Crow to re-ligitimize a policy of hate against African-Americans NOT simply to commemorate "war heroes". These "war heroes" killed Americans and tried to tear the country apart. They did not have America's best interests in mind and perhaps are NOT deserving of statues. Regardless of one's opinion of Civil War statues, knowing the history of the time some of them were erected is essential to understanding fully what this particular moment in America is really about.athomeinromehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03746756983388627630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-34747797315987690732017-08-24T20:26:27.836-07:002017-08-24T20:26:27.836-07:00Sadly this country is on a road of no return being...Sadly this country is on a road of no return being led by a violent and vocal minority that tell us what to read, what to see, what lectures to attend and what statues we should keep and which to destroy. This researched piece should be sent to every media/newspaper editorial board to enlighten the close-minded, self appointed arbiters of values and human rights. Simply madness. The Columbus Circle monument and Grants Tomb have also been mentioned. Your sane historical explanation of the accomplishments and contributions to medical research and society should make the Mayors office cringe in embarrassment but I bet their heads are too buried in the sand to give a crap.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09455260852354404149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7502312000087595701.post-70928425015364992322017-08-24T05:11:40.458-07:002017-08-24T05:11:40.458-07:00Thank you, Tom for the rational and dignified pres...Thank you, Tom for the rational and dignified presentation of the life and work of Dr. Sims.
